Well folks, it’s that time of year again: its time for the 2008 London to Brighton electric car run.

Organised by the Battery Vehicle Society and with an open invitation to everyone in the G-Wiz Owner’s Club, the cars start from Clapham at 9:30 in the morning and take a leisurely run down on minor roads, taking in some beautiful scenery and a leisurely lunch stop at Handcross, near Haywards Heath.

There are multiple charging points organised for the trip down, and – if required and booked in advance – for the trip back.  There are also charging points available at the start and at Brighton Marina at the end of the journey.

There will be lots of opportunities to socialise with other electric vehicle owners and the chance to see some rather unique electric cars, including some home-built specials!

Those who have attended the event before have reported back that it is a great event.

If you wish to join in, you'll need to download the event pack and fill in and return the application form.  Copies of this can be downloaded from http://www.batteryvehiclesociety.org.uk ... 08pack.pdf

Please do consider coming along folks.

I'm hoping that if enough G-Wiz owners turn up we can try to provide return charging for those interested. We'll have three portable generators on stand-by too for those who are worried about getting stranded!

Call me for more information.

Nikki.

Nikki, out of interest, what is the smallest generator that you can use to charge a Reva G-Wiz?

The marketing blurb says the charger is tolerant to brownouts and intermittent supply, but is it intelligent enough to lower the charge rate accordingly?

Thanks

Hi Marc,

I don't know for sure. I'm not a G-Wiz owner so I couldn't comment.

However...

If the GWiz runs at 3KW, I think then the smallest charger you could run it off would be a 3KW charger.  I have a 1KW generator which I used to use with my City El as it only had a 700W charger.

The three generators we're bringing on the event are all 6KVA generators. Theoretically I'm expecting each to be capable of charging two GWizes (or equivalent) each.

However, the generators are going to be backups and we'll be charging from wired power wherever possible.

Nikki.

I'd like to go - anyone want to allow me to come with them?  Don't wanna drive myself.

We're also more than happy for people to do half of the run, coming with us to Handcross and then heading back to London if they're worried about getting back.

Come and have fun! - the more the merrier ;)

I think you find the back seat a bit too snug!

If you'd like to come along for the day but don't want to bring a car I'm sure we can find you a seat somewhere.

We're certainly going to have some spare seats in the gaggle of Prius that my partner and I will be driving. Sorry that it's only half electric though :( Still, I'm working on mine to make it more electric! ;)
