I have insured my cars with Adrian Flux for over 15 years now. However, this year I moved away from them for two reasons.

The first was cost - they used to get me the best deal, almost without fail. However, this year I have managed to shave over £150 off their best quote on my main car. Shocking enough.

But my biggest problem was with the way they handled a post-accident hike in premiums. I was in a non-fault collision (smacked in the rear) which took some time to reach a conclusion. In the meantime my premium came up for renewal and they took an extra £250 off me, promising that once the claim had been sorted this money would be returned. When it was, it wasn't (if you see what I mean) and they argued this was never promised. Without the time or the inclination to get worked up about it I have voted with my feet. Very sad to have seen a company previously so good on customer service and price fail like this.

I think it's tough out there in insurance.  When people don't have any money they're more likely to take their chances with cheaper insurance (e.g. cheaper car) or no insurance (no car).

With Tesco, I had the same difficulty that you mentioned (i.e. losing part of the NCD because of an claim where the third-party was at fault but which had not fully concluded).  The difference was that I pressed them about it and they relented (didn't take more than two phone conversations though).  They had been dragging their heels getting the third party insurer to pay up.  They agreed to charge me later should they be unable to recover the costs and it was all OK.

Of course, this sort of thing only happens with comprehensive insurance.  Yet another reason for people to move away from expensive insurance "products".

I had a good quote from Adrian Flux which was at the time my best quote and £40 cheaper then anything that I'd been offered from an online broker.

I then called back my existing on-line insurer who had previously quoted me a little more to renew with a higher excess than Adrian Flux.  My existing insurers then matched the excess and undercut the premium slightly.

So it's certainly possible to get a good quote from Adrian Flux on a G-Wiz (depending on circumstances), but it's also worth discussing your renewal with your existing insurer if you've had a better offer elsewhere.
