REVA product announcement due at the Delhi motor show?

Postby MB » 06 Jan 2012 09:41

There are rumours that Mahindra REVA are going to be making a product announcement at the New Delhi motor show in India when it opens later on today.

The New Delhi motor show is one of the biggest motor shows in Asia. The company has already announced that REVA NXR will be at the show, but elsewhere in the Mahindra stable, there is also talk of an electric version of this car:

This is the Mahindra Verito, an Indian version of the Dacia Logan. It is a popular small family saloon. According to sources, the Verito Electric will be at the show with a 29kW electric motor and lithium ion batteries. Top speed is said to be 86km/h, range is 100km, normal charge time is 6 hours and the car can be fast charged in just over one hour.

I will post more news about the New Delhi motor show as I hear it. The show opens later on today.

Wow! That's exciting. Looks like REVA have been busy. Is this actually being released on sale or is it just a teaser? There is no word about the car on the Mahindra Verito website (http://www.mahindraverito.com/).

It's certainly a much bigger car than the REVA NXR and I can see it being popular if Mahindra can price it right.

I presume that Mahindra will only be selling this car in the Indian market? If they are manufacturing the Dacia Logan under licence, I suspect they only have that licence for local markets. I can't imagine Dacia being happy for them to sell their cars elsewhere.

However, could it mean that Dacia will have an electric drive version of the Logan, based on the Mahindra version? Oooh... the possibilities - Dacia are launching their cars in the UK next year.

Here is the fist bit of news from the Motor show

Jan 6 (Reuters) - Indian utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd expects to sell Mahindra Reva electric cars in India by November, a top official said.

The automaker, which acquired electric vehicle maker Reva in 2010, unveiled two electric cars at the India Auto Expo in New Delhi.

"We will launch these cars in the market by Diwali," Pawan Goenka, head of Mahindra Reva Electric Motor Co, as well as president at parent Mahindra & Mahindra, told reporters at the Auto Expo.

"India is ready for electric vehicles if manufacturers provide them," he said.

Diwali is the Indian festival of lights that falls in November. (Reporting by Henry Foy & Devidutta Tripathy; Editing by Ranjit Gangadharan)

I will try and find out some further information on the 2 electric cars which were unveiled.

There is lots going on at the show with Mahindra and electric vehicles. As well as the Mahindra Verito, which I've now found out is officially a concept car, they are also showing a big electric SUV concept - the SsangYong Korando E. This has a 120kWh battery pack (almost 13 times the capacity of the G-Wiz battery!), a claimed range of 180km and a top speed of 150km/h.

Realistically, I can't see the Korando E going into production any time soon - the cost of the battery in that vehicle would be astronomical!

Still trying to find out exactly what Mahindra REVA are showing on their stand, but it sounds very exciting if they are planning to have two different cars launched this year. Is the second car the NXG or something different? When I spoke to Chetan Maini last year, I got the distinct impression the NXG was being put back in the schedule.

According to a brief mention in a Mahindra press release, REVA are showing the NXR and the NXG on their stand. A separate press release states that REVA will have two new electric cars in production and on sale this year. I can only presume that this refers to the NXR and NXG.

The show officially opens in about two hours time, so hopefully we'll start hearing some more news and seeing some photographs then.

This is the official launch of the REVA NXR in India. I was told that the car has not been officially seen on display in India before now, which surprised me, seeing we had seen it in Europe back at the end of 2009.
